The parliamentary majority decided to make simple amendments to the Electoral Code to hold the elections with completely proportional system, said RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, at the National Assembly-Government question-and-answer session.
The Prime Minister stated that as a result of the agreement with the political forces, it was registered that the Prime Minister will resign in due time, after which the Parliament of Armenia will not elect a Prime Minister twice, and afterwards the Parliament will be dissolved by the force of law.
“The electoral system of the Electoral Code was not part of the agreements, but I asked my colleagues during all discussions what they think, whether there should be a rating electoral system or not. In fact, during our talks we stated that both the Prosperous Armenia and Bright Armenia leave the issue to the discretion of the parliamentary majority. In other words, they do not have a problem with having or not having a rating system.
Later the parliamentary majority, having discussions with the extra-parliamentary forces, with the representatives of the civil society, taking into account its own commitment, decided that we should make simple amendments to the Electoral Code, and the elections should be held by proportional system, that is to say, without a ranking list”, Pashinyan said.
The Prime Minister stated that during the meetings the parliamentary factions were not against the change of the electoral system, noting that they would not vote for it in order not share the political responsibility.
