Costas Mavrides, Member of the European Parliament from Cyprus, has spoken about the violations of international law committed by Azerbaijan and Turkey in 2020 Artsakh (Karabakh) war. In a conversation with “
Lurer” (News) of Public Television of Armenia, he noted that the European Union is going to get more involved in this purely humanitarian issue.
According to the MEP, first they should secure the safety of the detainees and PoWs, and second, most importantly, take into consideration the footage from videos and the reports.
“Torture is an endemic systemic fact in Azerbaijan. We are asking for the safe return of the detainees and PoWs in the last war”, he said.
For Mavrides it is not only a regional issue, but also a personal one.
“Knowing as a little kid and having experienced the Turkish aggression in Cyprus, during the invasion in 1974, and still of today having missing persons from that Turkish invasion in Cyprus, I have no option but to take this initiative. I know the pain of the missing persons being taken alive from their families,” the MEP said, confirming that they will not remain silent in face of this war crime against humanity.
