Petras Auštrevičius, Member of the European Parliament, spoke on the EU position in the 2020 Artsakh war. In a conversation with “Lurer” (News) of Public Television of Armenia, he claimed the situation in the South Caucasus after the war remains very tense․
“We don’t see a normal bilateral or regional forum and discussion going on between former fighting sides”, he said.
Auštrevičius expressed concern over the issue of release of hundreds of captives “as soon as possible” and their return to normal life.
“Generally I was not really happy with the role of European Union as such as a big influential international player, what role we had in that situation. I think we simply remained too silent and doing too little even to prevent this conflict from happening․ But once it happens, we have to be again doing our best in order to ease and de-escalate the situation and to bring a whole region to normality as soon as possible”, the MEP said.
Auštrevičius wished to see the European Union playing a more proactive role but not just giving some humanitarian assistance in this process.
