In 1999, UNESCO declared February 21as International Native Language Day, according to the official Facebook page of the RA National Library.
Since 2000, this day has been celebrated as the Day of Native Language Rights Recognition. International Native Language Day aims to perpetuate the political struggle waged around 70 years ago to recognize Bengali as a separate language.
According to UNESCO, one language disappears in the world every two weeks, taking with it an entire cultural heritage, and nearly half of the world's 6,000 languages may soon lose their speakers.
