Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Nigerian Finance Minister, is appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. She is the first female leader in this position. Her term will begin on 1 March 2021, BBC reports.
Okonjo-Iweala studied economics at Harvard University after living in Nigeria and witnessing a civil war in her adolescence. She recently received US citizenship. In 2003, she returned to Nigeria and served two terms as Finance Minister of Nigeria.
For 25 years, Okonjo-Iweala has worked as a development economist at the World Bank and reached the position of Managing Director.
