Today, the Belgian House of Representatives passed a resolution on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and its consequences with 130 votes in favor and 12 abstentions. As reported by the Public Radio, this was stated by the representative of the Committee of Armenians of Belgium Armine Hareyan.
The resolution "condemns the resumption of hostilities by Azerbaijan on September 27, 2020" and calls on the government to take a number of measures aimed at alleviating the plight of the war-torn population, identifying and prosecuting those responsible for war crimes. The resolution also calls on the government to take steps to maintain the ceasefire and negotiate a peace agreement that respects the borders of Nagorno-Karabakh and respects the right of its people to self-determination.
Among other things, the parliament condemns, in particular, the harmful role that Turkey has played in this war, and urges it to "cease military intervention in this conflict" and refrain from "a destabilizing role in the region."
The Committee of Armenians of Belgium welcomes the fact that the parliament has taken a clear, constructive position on this issue and thanks the parliamentarians who have contributed to it. Thus, the resolution paves the way for concrete and constructive action in the region. The committee calls on the government to act promptly on the recommendations of parliament.
The number of Armenians in the country is estimated at more than 30,000.
