Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of the RF State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, told HCH why Azerbaijan's "victory" in Karabakh should not be considered a profitable result.
Konstantin Zatulin said on the air: "It is clear from the Baku parade whose ally Azerbaijan is really. The fact of this union has been confirmed earlier and has expressed itself in many ways. Baku and Ankara coordinate policy in the Caucasus and work together. There were statements in Moscow that Azerbaijan and Armenia were equally close to Russia. In fact, the country's top leadership understands the difference between these countries, but preachers and commentators have not always understood that", he said.
The MP also explained why the outcome of the war in Karabakh should not be considered beneficial for Azerbaijan. "Azerbaijan did not win, but sowed the teeth of a dragon. He alerted Russia, caused a wave of hatred towards Azerbaijan by Armenia and the states that sympathize it . Not surprisingly, resolutions are adopted in France and the Netherlands. This "victory" may return to Turkey like a boomerang.
The MP believes that from now on Russia needs to intensify its policy in the Caucasus. "Only Russia's position did not allow Azerbaijan to attack Armenia. Although there were some episodes, including the destroyed Russian helicopter in Armenia. All this allows us to say that Russia's peacekeeping operation has no alternative and that Russia's presence in the Caucasus must be strengthened. Azerbaijan should be considered strategically problematic", he said.
Zatulin also assessed Aliyev's words about the historical Azerbaijani lands in Armenia. "Any analysis will show that it is an undisguised territorial claim. This is not the first case when Azerbaijan falsifies the history of these lands. In fact, the ancestors of the Azerbaijanis appeared there in the 12th century, but the Armenian historical monuments were in Karabakh earlier", he said.
Zatulin also criticized Erdogan's call to "bring Armenia to its senses". "This is another boast by the Turkish leader. He deliberately intimidates Armenia and caresses his ego. Aliyev does the same. They are demonstratively ignoring the feelings of their neighboring nation", he said, adding:
"Moscow must remember its obligations not to Armenia but to the entire Armenian people".
