The Russian Federation Council has agreed to use the Russian armed forces for a peacekeeping mission in Nagorno-Karabakh. The President of the Federation Vladimir Putin had applied to the council with a corresponding application.
Andrei Klishas, chairman of the Constitutional Legislation Committee, told RIA Novosti that in this case the consent of the Federation Council is needed to use the army, as it is not an operative military situation, but an event planned for several years.
The senator reminded that the peacekeeping mandate of the Russian troops in Nagorno Karabakh is envisaged for a period of five years, with the possibility of extension.
