The meeting of the President of the Republic of Armenia Armen Sarkissian and the President of the Republic of France Emmanuel Macron took place at the Elysee Palace.
During the conversation, the Presidents of Armenia and France discussed the situation in the Karabakh conflict zone.
President Sarkissian thanked President Macron, noting that Armenia highly appreciates the efforts and position of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair France and personally President Macron in the settlement of the conflict.
Sarkissian stressed that the large-scale military aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno Karabakh, with the Turkey support, continues, by targeting the settlements of Artsakh, the civilian population and civilian infrastructure, as a result of which there are casualties among the civilian population.
The Armenian President expressed deep concern over Turkey's military-political assistance to Azerbaijan, emphasizing that such involvement of Turkey, as a third party, aggravates the situation and endangers the stability and security of the region.
The President Sarkissian also said that Islamist terrorists brought to Azerbaijan by Turkey for participating in the military operations against Artsakh, are a special threat to the region, because that terrorists may appear in other countries, including Europe.
President Macron also expressed concern over the ongoing hostilities and the situation. Presidents Sarkissian and Macron agreed that there is no alternative to a peaceful settlement of the conflict and stressed the need to implement the ceasefire agreements reached.
The Presidents also stressed the role of the OSCE Minsk Group in the settlement of the conflict and emphasized the need to return to the negotiating table as soon as possible through the mediation of the Minsk Group Co-Chairs.
The Presidents of Armenia and France also noted with satisfaction that the special Armenian-French relations built on the basis of centuries-old ties and friendship between the two peoples continue to develop in the spirit of friendship and mutual understanding.
To remind - Armenian President Armen Sarkissian left for Paris from Brussels, where he met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, and European Council President Charles Michel.
