The official letter of Vangelis Meimarakis, Greek Member of the European Parliament, Vice-President of the European Democratic Party, submitted to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell. The RA NA "My Step" faction MP Mkhitar Hayrapetyan presented the letter on his FB page.
“We, the undersigned MEPs, are writing to you in order to express our concern regarding the escalation of conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The air and artillery attacks that the Azerbaijani armed forces launched in the region constitute a clear violation of humanitarian law, contributing to the geopolitical volatility of the region, and, more importantly, have resulted in the death of Armenian civilians.
It is imperative for the EU to act swiftly and decisively in order to assist in the resumption of the peace process. In the absence of concrete EU action, Turkey and Russia, whose spheres of influence overlap in Nagorno-Karabakh, will play a leading role in the region. Erdogan already announced his intentions last July following deadly clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
The EU must not allow Nagorno-Karabakh turning into Libya, where the involvement of Turkey and Russia has caused a prolonged internal conflict to the detriment of Libyan people. Finally, considering the significant geopolitical role of the region in the energy supply of Europe, it is necessary for the EU to mediate a resolution to this crisis so that both parties can return to negotiations under the framework of the Minsk Group”.
Sincerely yours,
Vangelis Meimarakis".
