On September 21, all Armenians celebrate the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia. The Declaration of Independence of Armenia was adopted on August 23, 1990, at the sitting of the Supreme Council.
On September 21, 1991 a referendum on secession from the USSR was held in Armenia, in which 94.39% of the 2,056,758 voting eligible citizens said "yes" to independence. Summing up the results of the referendum, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia declared the Republic of Armenia an independent state on September 23.
Due to the pandemic this year, most of the events on September 21 will be held online. The "Hero of Our Times" award ceremony will take place in Zvartnots Cathedral, which is the official summary of the program with the same name. For the second year in a row, Independence Day will be celebrated honoring the Citizen of the Republic of Armenia.
