On July 5, 1995, for the first time in the history of independent Armenia a referendum was held to adopt the RA Constitution. It was adopted almost unanimously.
According to the Constitution, the Republic of Armenia was declared a democratic, social, legal state, the functions of the three branches of government (legislative, executive, judicial) were clearly separated. The main law enshrined the rights and freedoms of human and citizen.
The constitution was amended on November 27, 2005 by a referendum. The last constitutional amendments were made on December 6, 2015, through a referendum. With new amendments, Armenia switched from a semi-presidential model of government to a parliamentary one.
By the decision of the Government of July 4, 2013, July 5 is marked not only as the Constitution Day, but also as the Day of State Symbols. The state symbols are the state flag of the Republic of Armenia - the tricolor, the coat of arms and the anthem.
The RA President Armen Sargsyan sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of the RA Constitution Day. In particular, the message says: "The Constitution is not only a right and a duty, but also a culture of thinking and activity, a system of values, a philosophy".
