The Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Ruben Rubinyan informed that the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mrs. Marija Pejcinovic Buric had recently issued a statement in support of the Armenian authorities in resolving the constitutional crisis.
Rubinyan also published the text of the statement, according to which:
"The constitutional crisis in Armenia can be overcome with the advice of the Venice Commission.
The opinion of the Venice Commission, which was approved on June 19 and made public today makes it possible to resolve the central issues of the current constitutional crisis between the National Assembly and the Constitutional Court”, said Maria Pejchinovich Buric, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
In this regard the Venice Commission clarified the scope of the review of the Constitutional Court in the process of amending the Constitution, as well as the authority of the National Assembly to annul its decision to initiate a referendum.
Moreover, given the impact of the current norms on the composition of the Constitutional Court, the Venice Commission has acknowledged that the full implementation of the relevant provisions of the 2015 Constitution pursues a legitimate aim.
"I urge all branches of government to follow the recommendations of the Venice Commission to overcome the constitutional crisis and to implement the relevant provisions of the 2015 Constitution in accordance with European standards", she said.
