Today the RA Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan, referring to Lanzarote Convention "on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse", stated that it is in fact a fight against child molestation.
"49 of its 50 articles have nothing to do with education and are designed to toughen the fight against child molestation. The question arises - why the previous authorities joined the convention in 2010 and did not ratify it for ten years. For one simple reason - they also had persons who were convicted for it, engaged in child molestation, and previous authorities did not address this issue for certain political reasons", said the Minister, adding that only one article of the Convention deals with education.
"All allegations of sex education, textbooks and new programs are false. This article just urges to provide general information to our children so that they can recognize the violence and be able to defend themselves”, the minister explained.
On May 11 the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia ratified the Council of Europe Convention "on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse", which Armenia signed in 2010.
