More than 600,000 Armenians took part in the Great Patriotic War. Almost half of them did not return from the front lines. Four armenians who took part in the war (Hovhannes Baghramyan, Hamazasp Babajanyan, Ivan Isakov and Armenak Khamperyants) were awarded the title of Marshal of the Soviet Union.
For heroic deeds on the battlefield, 106 armenians was awarded the title of Hero of the USSR. Pilot Nelson Stepanyan and Marshal Hovhannes Baghramyan were awarded the title of two time hero.
