More than 600,000 Armenians took part in the Great Patriotic War. Almost half of them did not return from the front lines. Four armenians who took part in the war (Hovhannes Baghramyan, Hamazasp Babajanyan, Ivan Isakov and Armenak Khamperyants) were awarded the title of Marshal of the Soviet Union.
For heroic deeds on the battlefield, 106 armenians was awarded the title of Hero of the USSR. Pilot Nelson Stepanyan and Marshal Hovhannes Baghramyan were awarded the title of two time hero.
One of those 106 was an ordinary boy from the village of Horom. This is how the son of the hero pilot Vazgen Oganesov describs his father. He proudly represents his father's fighting path. Throughout the war, Oganesov made 324 combat flights, destroying 23 enemy jets
