27 years ago on this day, August 23 of 1990, the Armenian SSR Supreme Council adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Armenia, “expressing the united will of the Armenian people, proceeding from the principles of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the generally recognized norms of international law, exercising the right of nations to free self-determination”. By the Declaration, the Armenian SSR was renamed to the Republic of Armenia or Armenia. In the following phase of acquiring independence for the former Soviet Republic, on September 21, 1991 the people said yes to the independence of Armenia in the Independence Referendum.
