November 29th, 1956, marks the beginning of Television in Armenia: in February - following two months of probation period on air, TV was officially launched. The programs started to air 4 times a week, lasting 2 hours each. On August 6th, 1957 informational program “News of the Week” was added to the list of programs becoming a regular one starting from February, 1958. This marks the beginning of news editorial.
Gradually, TV viewers were enabled to watch opera and ballet performances. TV and Radio Symphonic Orchestra was formed being led by Ohan Duryan. Starting from 1978 part of the programs aired in color images. The average duration of programs reached 12 hours. Back then, the number of TV sets available in Armenia reached 500 000, 100 000 of which were color TVs. Today, the large Public TV family celebrates 60th anniversary with a variety of high quality programs and TV projects.
