Prior to invention of gas stoves, people used stone ovens. In 1742 Benjamin Franklin created a metal-lined Pennsylvanian fireplace, intended to produce more heat and less smoke than an ordinary open fireplace. In 1880 Franklin’s student Benjamin Thompson created a kitchen stove.
