On August 23rd in 1990, Supreme Council of Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted declaration of independence of Armenia, “expressing the common will of the people of Armenia, realizing its responsibilities for the future of the people in restoring its historic justice, taking into consideration the principles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international law norms, realizing the self-determination right of nations.” The following text of the declaration was later reflected in RA Constitution.

Armenia was then renamed to the Republic of Armenia or Armenia. Following the referendum of independence on September 21st, 1991, people gave their votes for the independence of the country.
