Putin-Erdogan meeting took place in Saint Petersburg. This has been the first meeting, after Turkish air forces downed Russian Su-24 in November 2015, resulting in crisis of relations between the two countries.
Following the coup attempt in Turkey, Western leaders criticized Erdogan for domestic policy, whereas Putin, on the contrary, sent a message of support to his Turkish counterpart.
According to Turkish “Milliyet” newspaper, the failed coup attempt is bringing Turkey and Russia closer. As a result of tourism crisis and loss of foreign investors, Turkey has found itself in an economic crisis, while resuming trade and economic relations with Russia may help overcome the existing situation. Russia, on the other hand, facing the threat of international isolation, may benefit from restoring ties with a valuable trade partner.
