Prominent military figure Never Safaryan was born in 1907, in the city of Archesh, Province of Van.
Prominent military figure Never Safaryan was born in 1907, in the city of Archesh, Province of Van. He lost his father in times of the Genocide. Together with his family Nver migrated to Eastern Armenia. After his mother’s death in 1919 the 12-year-old Nver was taken to Oshakan orphanage. He graduated from united military school in Yerevan, later studied in Moscow military academy.
During the first years of World War II he has led the defense of Ukrainian cities, among them Dnepropetrovsk, Donetsk and Voroshilovgrad (today’s Lugansk),
Starting from February 1943 Nver commanded Tamanyan (Armenian) Rifle division number 89. The same December he was awarded the rank of Major General. The 89th division under Safaryan’s command took part in liberation of Kerch Peninsula, as well as the liberation of Sevastopol and Poland.
The division reached Berlin. They celebrated the conquering of Reichstag by performing a triumphant Kochari. After the end of the war Safaryan ordered his warriors to hunt a deer as sign of their victory and hang its horns on the train carrying the division warriors to Armenia. “We have ended the war with glory, and we should return to Armenia with glory”, he said.
General Never Safaryan died in Yerevan in 1982.
