At the beginning of World War I the Turkish authorities organized a large scale massacre of Armenian population in the city of Van. Turkish troops that were defeated in the battle of Caucasus, together with the Kurdish bandits and Muslim crowd were killing Armenians, stealing their property and ruining villages. Armeninans led a self-defense, tenaciously fighting against the enemy in some provinces of Van – Shatakh, Hayots dzor, Archesh, Timar and Ayjavaz . Among them the most long lasting and effective one was the defense battle of Van.
