Amaras monastery is situated near Machkalashen village of Martuni region, on the valley between Khazakh and Lusavorich mounts. According to the evidences of Armenian historians Amaras Monastery was built through the efforts of Grigor Lusavorich (the Illuminator) at the beginning of the 4th century. In the 5th century Mesrop Mashtots established the first-ever school of Artsakh in Amaras monastery.
