When the peaceful demonstrations of Artsakh movement were replaced by armed struggle, Vladimir Balayan was a detachment commander on the front-line. He had sold his car and bought weapons to form a self-defense detachment to confront the enemy. Vladimir led the defense of Martakert region, but in times when the situation on the front-line became worse, together with his friends he would promptly rush to their rescue.
