In 2013 Armenia’s 2nd capital Gyumri became CIS cultural capital, later in 2016 - Youth capital of Armenia. Gyumri is also a leader in its sports achievements.

Given the continuous achievements of Gyumri athletes and the many medals won from Republican, European and World champions, Samvel Balasanyan suggested Gyumri to be granted the title of Armenia’s Sports capital.
