According to the tradition, the name Zvartnots is derived from the word zvartun which means angel. Till now no one succeeded to fully discover the mysteries of this unmatched masterpiece of architecture.
According to Sebeos historian this was the very place where the Armenian King Trdat III and Gregory the Illuminator met. The Zvartnots Temple was built during the reign of Catholicos Nerses G Tayetsi 643-652 years, which is proved by a Greek record.
There is no information about the collapse of the temple in the historic sources, it is known that it stood till the X century. At the beginning of the XX century the ruined temple was covered with land, in 1901-07 Vicar Khachik Dadyan initiated excavations and in 1904 Toros Toramanyan reformed the whole construction.
In 1989 the Zvartnots Temple was included in the UNESCO list of international cultural values.
