World Humanitarian Day is held each year on August 19 to commemorate the suicide bombing at the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad in 2003. The bombing caused the death of 22 staff members. The Aurora Prize has also joined the events on World Humanitarian Day. The prize is the philanthropic vision of Vartan Gregorian, Noubar Afeyan, and Ruben Vardanyan, the co-founders of 100 LIVES.

The Aurora Prize is international; the winner will be awarded with $ 100 000, and the philanthropic organization which inspired them and had an impact on their actions - $ 1 000 000. According to the authors, it will give the winner a chance to continue the cycle of philanthropy.
