The EU condemned the murder of the Azeri journalist Rasim Aliyev. The External Actions Office of the institution qualified the murder as "awful news".
"The EU supports the principles of freedom of expression and freedom of the media, which are fundamental elements of a democratic society.Azerbaijan needs to promote a safe environment for journalists and other media representatives, enabling them to carry out their work without fear of violence or persecution" was written in the declaration.
OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović also condemned the murder of the journalist. A day before he called on Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and mentioned the rapidly worsening situation in the country connected with the freedom of media, and urged him to ensure the safety of journalists.
The journalist was beaten by the relatives of the local "Gabala" football team's player Javid Huseynov. The reason was the journalist's criticism addressed to the football player on Facebook.
