An unfavorable but not accidental site had been chosen for Machu Picchu, or as often referred, "Lost City of the Incas". It was sooner a royal residence and a religious retreat than a trade and military center.
Machu Picchu lost its significance in 1532 after the Spanish conquered Peru.
