During the 1980-1990s, Mexican authorities tried to involve bigger foreign capital to their country.
The North American contract on free trade signed in 1992 caused the residents’ anger. On January 1, 1994, on the day when the agreement entered into force, armed clashes started in one of the poorest states of Mexico – Chiapas.
On December 22, 1997, the bloodiest clashes took place. 45 peaceful residents were killed in the church during a prayer. The residents blamed the authorities for not undertaking steps to prevent the bloody events and to help people.
Those events drew the attention of the whole world. Numerous journalists and photographers traveled to Chiapas in a short period of time. The most famous photo depicting the people’s fighting has been taken by Mexican photographer Pedro Valtierra.
He has photographed how armless Indian women try to withdraw soldiers from their lands.
