The statue of great revolutionist Vladimir Lenin was placed at the Republic Square, previously called Lenin Square, in 1940.
An open all-union contest had been announced in 1938 for the statue project. Dozens of architects participated. Finally the republic’s leadership decided to assign the project of the statue to USSR People’s Artist Sergei Merkurov and Tiflis-based young architects, spouses Natalia Paremuzova and Levon Vardanov.
