In 1966 the African-American Civil Rights Movement began in the United States with a slogan “Black Power”. The participants of the movement demanded that the rights of white and black people be equaled and the oppressions be stopped.
The Movement was also referred in 1968 by means of sportsmen during the Olympic Games conducted in Mexico. During the awards ceremony American track and field athlete Tommie Smith, who took the first place, and John Carlos, who occupied the third place, displayed the way of welcoming typical of the black people’s movement. They came up at the ceremony with black socks which resembled the ones belonging to poor black people, raised their fists with black gloves and this way used their victory to show the whole world that they are against the oppressions committed against the black in the United States.
