One of the strongest Armenians of the 20th century has set 43 world records, and has won 111 golden medals in different competitions.
The boy from Leninakan occupied himself in volleyball as long as his uncle opened in front of him the doors of other type of sport. Yuri familiarized himself with weightlifting and immediately fell in love with this sport.
1975-1976, he became world and European Champion in 75 kg weight category. This was his first big achievement in sport. Shortly Yuri was recognized as Master of Sports of International Class. And this happened at the age of 19.
In 1983 at the European Championship Yuri Vardanyan set a world record and defeated the Olympic champion. In 1985 he won during his last World Championship.
Yuri Vardanyan has become a world champion for 9 times. He considered himself to be lucky at world championships, but unlucky at the Olympic Games, the opportunity of participation of which the Armenian athlete was already not being given. He simply could not be exceeded.
