In 1948 people with blue berets appeared in different countries of the world. They were authorized by the United Nations and were called “peacekeepers”.
On this day of 1948 the United Nations Security Council established the first peacekeeping mission. When the task of these people was being discussed at the UN Headquarters, many of the present people did not believe that peacekeepers could implement the mission. Working already for 70 years, the UN actively struggles for peace. But up to now the path leading to peace seems to be difficult.
Since its foundation, the United Nations has implemented 71 operations of maintaining peace in states. Since the first UN peacekeeping mission was established, 3 358 peacekeepers have lost their lives in the service of peace.
