The memorial opened in presence of state officials and thousands of guests on the day of the 50th anniversary of the heroic battle.
During one of friendly meetings at the beginning of the 1960s Hrachya Kochar started speaking of the Heroic Battle of Sardarapat.
One of the brightest pages of Armenian history seemed to have been faded, though even 50 years had not passed from the decisive battle. During that very evening an idea came to the mind of the First Secretary of the Hoktemberyan's Local Committee Dalakyan to build a memorial commemorating the heroes of the liberation fight. He was advised to apply to Rafael Israelyan.
Alexander Tamanyan’s pupil accepted the proposal with great pride. For those times this could be even called a challenge. Along with sculptors Samvel Manasyan, Ara Harutyunyan and Arsham Shahinyan they start working; on one hand they wanted to express Armenian heroic breath and on the other hand they were cautious about Moscow’s response.
The construction lasted 5 years. Rafael Israelyan had an entire collection of drawings. The memorial opened in presence of state officials and thousands of guests on the day of the 50th anniversary of the heroic battle.
But Rafael Isahakyan considered something was lacking. And the architect initiated the construction of the museum. It was to complete the victorious breath of the heroic battle.
