The day – May 28, the year – 1918, the acting figures – Aram Manukyan, Nikol Aghbalyan, Hamo Ohanjanyan and Alexander Khatisyan. The First Republic of Armenia was established on that very day, that year and with the efforts of those people. The goal was to establish statehood and to save that small part of Armenian people from physical extermination, because the Turkish government considered the issue of Western Armenia as closed. Their goal was to eliminate this small part, too. If we had not proclaimed our statehood on that day and had not united, in all appearances, we would have become a world-spread nation without homeland.
Gerasim Balayan, Andranik Ozanyan and Smbat Baroyan had their outstanding contribution to creation of the army of the First Republic. Coming out to international area in a short period of time, the Republic of Armenia established diplomatic ties with other countries.
Recording numerous achievements, the Armenians could not ignore their culture of many centuries, because it played a significant role in our independence. A number of educational establishments opened one after another, and the most significant of them was Yerevan State University.
