In 1829 a trade caravan travelling to Los Angeles diverted from its path. The summer heat began to choke people: they had an insatiable desire to drink water. Several volunteers went to find a source of water. The oasis they discovered soon became known; the population of Las Vegas started increasing.
In 1864 a decision was adopted to turn the territory into a zone of gambling, but local residents were against it. In 1869 a law was adopted, which gave to gambling a right of acting freely.
The games received a greater impetus in the 1930s. Bookmaking centers soon opened. There was a population of 16 000 in Las Vegas in 1940. After a year that number doubled.
