On November 13, 1985, Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted in Columbia. With the number of victims it occupies the 4th place among the well-known volcanic eruptions.
It was not very strong, but the ice crystals of the mountain peak melted down because of the hot lava flow, and water caused numerous collapses.
The calamity claimed life of 25 000 people. The photo is the most known moment reflecting this tragic event. The girl had remained between concrete slabs. Rescuers’ efforts were in vain; the girl died after 60 hours of struggle.
