The end of the Great Patriotic War was heralded on May 9, 1945. After 2-week bloody battles Soviet troops occupied Berlin, and put an end to the game Hitler had started.
The first triumphal parade was held in Red Square, Moscow, on June 22. The day had been announced as non-working. In December of the same year Stalin decided not to celebrate the day with a parade and to make the day working. Only after 20 years during the rule of Brezhnev, veterans started conducting triumphal parades.
