On February 22, 1988, residents of Artsakh organized a strong demonstration in Stepanakert. The population demanded unification with Armenia and did not want to be a part of Azerbaijan.
The unprecedented phenomenon during the 70-year-old history of the Soviet Union did not remain unanswered.
February 27-29, Azerbaijani police along with Azerbaijani criminal bands started their pressures against the Armenian population of Baku and Sumgait. Some months later Kirovabad was left without Armenians, too. Numerous voluntary teams were set up, and the Artsakh War started. Today Artsakh is free at the price of life of 6 000 warriors.
