German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her phone call with the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu explained the position of Germany in referring to the massacre of the Armenians and ‘genocide’.
Christiane Wirtz, the German deputy government spokesperson, confirmed this. Earlier Die Welt daily newspaper reported that Davutoglu complained Merkel about using the word ‘genocide’ in the resolution to be discussed in the Bundestag on April 24.
The resolution notes that the continuous massacres and killings of more than 1 million Armenians is an instance of mass extermination, ethnic cleansing, displacement and genocides committed in the 20th century.
