The American Virginia Schau was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography. The photographer went fishing with her husband on May 3, 1953.
They were observing a truck on the bridge over the river which couldn't be circumvented because of the narrow road. The truck unexpectedly turned on the bridge and the cabin hung over the river. Virginia at that moment remembered the photo contest of the Sacramento Bee newspaper. Each week the newspaper gave ten dollars for the best photography.
Virginia's photo won the Sacramento Bee contest and appeared in various magazines and newspapers. The Jury of the Pulitzer Prize gave the award to her photo in 1954.
