Hearing of the disaster, Mother Teresa arrived in Armenia on December 18. In Yerevan she met with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers Nikolai Ryzhkov and expressed her deep condolences for the tragedy.
On December 20, before leaving Yerevan, Mother Teresa visited Etchmiadzin and expressed her condolences to Catholicos Vazgen I.
Photographer Martin Shahbazyan remembers that His Holiness seldom spoke a foreign language with his guests: thus he honored only very respectable people: Mother Teresa was exclusion, too.
