For the first time Boutan managed to photograph under water with a spotlight.
This is the first photo taken under water. The author is diver Louis Boutan. He photographed himself with a special underwater camera in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 50 meters. It is also considered the most successful photo.
Boutan was a marine zoologist and made the most part of his photo experiments in the Arago Laboratory. He was annoyed at camera disadvantages of that time, which made impossible the process of taking underwater pictures.
After many experiments, together with his brother he eventually invented a device, which enabled to photograph under water. But cameras were not so developed then. and for one photo he had to stay under water for 30 minutes. To speed up the process, he began working with artificial lighting. For the first time Boutan managed to photograph under water with a spotlight.
