French – Armenian acclaimed director and script-writer Henri Verneuil would have turned 94 today. The director, originally named Ashot Malaqyan, became a favourite to all Armenians after “Mayriq” movie, both written and directed by him. Through the history of his family Verneuil presents the will of the Armenian emigrants who had survived the Armenian Genocide to beat the death and overcome all the hardships. Other filmography of Verneuil includes around 60 movies.
He is a multi-awarded director and script-writer. His awards include Honorary Cesar and Palm d’Or. He was considered one of the best French filmmakers back in 1951 for his first feature film, “La Table-aux-Crevés.” He touched upon the Armenian Genocide issue many times in his films.
His son, Patrik Malaqyan remembers him as a human and a father of a family.
