It is the first time the construction noise breaks the silence in Nor Varagavanq monasetry, since it was built 777 years ago. It is the first time the semi-ruined St Virgin church of the complex is fundamentally renovated.
The work started in fall, 2012. Now it is just a few days away from the first stage of completion. The construction is carried out by the Monuments Center of the Ministry of Culture with a team of skillful experts and master-constructors.
The locals are also involved in restoration. Slavik Alaverdyan from the nearby Varagavan village is at the construction site from the very first day. He overcame his lack of skills with the help of the master-constructors.
He says the villagers are much encouraged by the fact that the most famous, yet long-unacting church of Berd area is restored by the benefaction of their compatriot Norayr Khachatryan. The key principle of the church restoration is the maximal use of its own old stones.
