10 % of the newborns in Armenia are premature neonates, with great number of blind babies among them. The new “Child Blindness and Prevention Excellence Center” in Yerevan will contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of blindness among the neonates. It is the only one of its kind in the region.
Well known experts of the ophthalmology field from the US, European and post-Soviet countries took part in the official inauguration of the center. They came to Armenia to participate in the 13th International Conference of Ophthalmology.
Along with the development of the aquariums saving lives of the newborn, the child blindness cases became more frequent. The provision of plentiful oxygen, which is the only hope to save a child, unfortunately, at the same time takes their sight away. The doctors call it retinopathia, and it is widespread in Armenia.
Tigran ahakyan, the RA Minister of Healthcare says this is the result of cooperation between the state, the private sector, diaspora, and international organizations. With this outcome the maternity hospitals will try to solve the problem directly inside the hospitals.
