Cinema is, for sure, the most mass-oriented form of arts. It can change the views of people on things, phenomena, and processes. Cinema is of utmost importance in world recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
“Mayrig”, a movie by Henri Verneuil, for example did more than the politicians could do on the issue. A film with the key Hollywood actors can form an attitude in the world among millions of people from Africa to Alaska. And that is the very reason why the Turkish authorities give hostile reception to any film on the Armenian Genocide.
The better the movie, the stricter the Turkish response is. In this terms Ankara’s response to “The Cut” by Turkish director Fatih Akin, was more than expected.
Prior to appearing at Venice IFF, the director was interviewed by the Armenian “Agos” newspaper in Istanbul. He gained some hostile threats by the Turkish nationalists.
