A street in Queens, New York was named after Russian – American writer, journalist of Armenian origin Sergey Dovlatov. It was in June when the City Hall approved the initiative to name the street next to the place Dovlaov had lived after the famed writer of Armenian origin. The ceremony was attended by the representatives of the City Hall. The unveiling was performed by Dovlatov’s widow Elena Dovlatova. The renowned writer had lived part of his life in the USSR, then he moved to the US.
Dovlatov spoke of his Armenian roots in some of his stories and “Ours” autobiographical novel. He was persecuted, was fired, his works were not published. But he had no doubt the time for his literature was yet to come. After prolonged troubles he was finally allowed to leave the Soviet Union in 1978.
With the help of friends Dovlatov moved to Queens, a part of New York not very much different from the Soviet Union in terms of demography. Russian, Armenian, Georgian or other Central-Asian languages could often be heard in streets of Queens.
